12  | 吳下每有鄉村小夫，語言應對，全不務實。問其里居，如安亭則曰安溪，茜涇則曰茜溪。石浦則曰石川，芝塘則曰芝川，疁塘則曰疁溪，塗松則曰松溪。但取新美，不知失其義理。蓋亭乃漢制鄉都之名，如華亭、夷亭、望亭，皆古名。塘、浦，乃吳中水道之名。川與溪，則水出兩山之間大而駛者，如蜀之東西川、越之剡溪，婺之蘭溪、湖之苕霅等溪是矣。蘇、松之地，平疇千里，塘浦浜港經緯其間。通潮處，其水以時長落；無潮處，其水平漫如常。與彼異矣。必欲以川溪名之，亦未為不可。但亭與塘、浦，其名傳自古昔，初非朝歌、勝母之可憎，柏人、彭亡之可忌。不知何辱於此輩而必欲更之邪！ |
