癸亥三年秋，龍門王通字仲淹，河東龍門人。獻䇿不報，通詣闕獻太平十二䇿，帝不能用，罷歸，通遂教授于河、汾之間，弟子自逺至者甚衆，累徴不起，楊素甚重之，勸之仕，通曰：「通有先人之敝，廬足以庇風雨，薄田足以供𩜾粥，讀書談道足以自樂，願明公正身以治天下，使時和年豐，通也。受賜多矣，不願仕也」。或譖通于素曰：「彼實慢公，公何敬焉？」素以問通，通曰：「使公可慢，則僕得矣，不可慢，則僕失矣。得失在僕，公何預焉！」素待之如初。弟子賈瓊問息謗，通曰：無辨問止怨，曰：「不爭。通嘗稱：「無赦之國，其刑必平，重斂之國，其財必削。又曰：「聞謗而怒者讒之囮，五戈反，烏媒也。。見譽而喜者，佞之媒也。絶囮去媒，讒佞逺矣」。大業末，卒于家，門人諡曰文中子。考隋書王通無傳，其行事畧見于唐書王績王勃傳：績，通之弟。勃，通之孫也。通鑑所載，多採于中說文中子世家。然據中說，唐初魏徴、杜淹皆通弟子，隋書》為徴奉敕所撰，何竟不為通立傳。或曰王績嘗持杜淹所撰文中子世家，授陳叔逹欲上史館，時長孫無忌不悅學，叔達弟叔恬嘗糾無忌，淹又與無忌有隙，故其書遂不得上。宋龍川陳氏曰：房、魏諸公，雖嘗往來河汾，而師友之義實未成，且智，又不足以盡知其道，故當時朝論有所不及，說或然歟？並録之以備考。
