越劍性銳,必託槌砧以成純鉤;楚柘質勁,必資搒檠以成弓;人性雖敏,必藉善言以成德行。故槌砧者,夷不平也;搒檠者,矯不正也;善言者,正不善也。人目短于自見,故借鏡以觀形;髮拙於自理,必假櫛以修束;心闇於自炤,則假言以策行。面之所以形,明鏡之力也;髮之所以理,玄櫛之功也;行之所以策,善言之益也。鏡櫛理形,其惠輕也;善言成德,其惠重也。人皆悅鏡之明己形,而不慕士之明己心;人皆欲櫛之理其髮,不願善言之理其情。是棄重德而採輕功,不亦倒乎?為衣冠者,己乎不能,則知越鄉,借人以製之,至於理身而不知借言以脩其行,是處其身輕而於冠重,不亦謬乎?君子重正言之惠,賢於軒璧之贈,樂聞其過,勝於德義之名。故楚莊王輕千乘之國,而重申叔一言;范獻賤萬畝之田,以貴舟人片說;季路抱五慎之誡,趙盈佩九言之箴。以此觀之,軒壁之與田邑,豈能與善言齊價哉!夫桓侯不採越人之說,卒成骨髓之疾;吳王不聽枚乘之言,終受夷滅之禍。夫人之將疾者,必不甘魚肉之味;身之將敗,必不納忠諫之言。故臨死者謂無良醫之蔽,將敗者謂無直諫之臣。而不聽善言,是耳聾也。非其耳之有塞,善言不入耳乎。是以明者納規於未形,採言於患表,從善如轉圜,遣惡如讎敵。正音日聞於耳,禍害逾遠於身。昔堯設招諫之鼓,舜樹誹謗之木,湯立司過之士,武王置誡慎之鼗。以聖哲之神鑒,窮機洞微,非有毫釐之謬也,猶設廣聽之術,開嘉言之路,豈不貽厥將來,表正言之益耶。以夫先聖猶能採言於芻蕘,奚況布衣而不貴言乎?故臣子之於君父,則有獻可替否諷諫之文。知交之於朋友,亦有切磋琢磨相成之義。君子若能聽言如響,從善如流,則身安南山,德茂松柏,聲振金石,名流千載也。
