致高澍然書

將樂梁月山茂才,與光澤高雨農舍人澍然書云:「兄以學文學道為二而一,而歸於有所自得,其說善矣。然以學文自居,而以學道為諱,則未免惑於流俗之見,岐文與道而二之也。夫以道難明,古來大賢,猶必深造,然後有得,故有孳孳學道而道不明者,未有不學道而道能實有諸己也。學道而專有事於文,則道何由根諸中而心與之一?使道氣果自充盈歟?抑以昌黎韓子因學文而見道,以是為法而自信歟?觀韓子之言為文也,取於心而注於手,汩汩然來,浩乎其沛然,言之短長與聲之高下皆宜者,非其所自得乎。其所以至是者,曰由氣盛,且曰:『氣,水也。言,浮物也。』其所謂氣先文而有,即孟子所養之氣是也,學道之效也。豈若今人專求諸篇章句字,與夫機趣意味,筆力骨格之間耶。其始之養是氣也,不望於速成,不誘於勢利,非三代兩漢之書不敢觀,非聖人之志不敢存,行之乎仁義之途,游之乎《詩》《書》之源,以養其根,加其膏,而後本深末茂,發為文章,自然造道親切,盈而有餘,(一)言約而不失一辭。然則韓子之文之不可及者,正以學道功深,精實純粹之理充溢其中,所以閎中肆外,光輝發越而不可掩也。故或問韓子:『為文宜何師?』必答曰:『師古聖賢人。』『如何師古聖賢人?』必答曰:『師其意,不師其辭。』又曰:『愈所能言者,皆古之道。』又曰:『愈之所志於古者,不惟其辭之好,好其道焉爾。』韓子曷嘗不學道,因學文而見道,此後人意忖之言耳。兄學韓之文,宜學韓之所以為文。乃學文而諱言學道,謂古文近道,服習之久,得其氣味之美,以為文自有道氣,而足以載乎道。如是云云,果得韓之所以養氣者,為之根柢歟?抑所謂道氣,文成而後見之歟?如前之云,信乎善矣,如後之云,古人所謂載道者,或不近是也。韓子云:『志乎古,必遺乎今。』如必諱言學道,得無畏乎人之非笑,而以為非笑,猶有人之見存歟?君子之務為實學,由乎道也。其孳孳深造不已者,非苟避毀就譽,得熙熙攘攘輩稱之許之,以希名於世也。蓋求去疵全淳,積義理於中,以化其氣質之私耳。如果施諸人倫日用間,內無偏辟回曲之慚,外之百體四肢,皆由順正而無悖於道。彼同流合污之口,忌訕百端,譬如落葉飄風之過耳,何足介懷,又何能撼其亭亭卓立之概耶。以兄之才之學,果能挺然於世俗之上,勇往直前,追韓子之所以學道者而學文,則昔得其門而升堂者,今且入室,周其奧窔,寢饋其中,而以身為昌黎矣,何必向昌黎口頭討氣息生活耶。」云云。語見《近思齋書牘》中。聲木謹案:茂才篤志潛學,生平最服膺朱子,是篇論養氣學文,亦頗有見到語。茂才尚撰有《四書題說》二卷、《正念齋語》二卷、《近思齋答問》一卷、《書牘》一卷、《雜著》一卷。建州丁汝恭編為《月山遺書》,道光戊申孟春,貳堂樂集貲刊本,予已錄入《再續補匯刻書目》中。
